- Abstract
Project management techniques are common within a number of construction related industries, however, higher education is not a field to which the practices of project management are routinely applied. Although multiple factors could lead to the lack of project management application in higher education, this study focused on faculty/staff self-efficacy and project work experience. The purpose was to determine if self-efficacy and project work experience contribute to the lack of project management techniques applied in higher education. The study was based upon Bandura's theory of self-efficacy and how project work experience may affect faculty/staff venturing into applying project management techniques. The significance of the study will contribute to addressing the gaps in the literature pertaining to why project work in higher education is viewed differently than other industries experiencing similar issues. The study shows the implications of self-efficacy and project work experience along with how organizational change factors in the application of project management techniques. The results of the study provided a positive change in the organizational climate of higher education by demonstrating the value of project management in addressing a variety of processes within a higher education setting. Finally, the biblical application of the research correlated with the evidence of project management techniques utilized in the Old Testament accounts of Nehemiah and the reconstruction of the walls of Jerusalem.

21. Careers of Early- and Mid-career Academics
- Abstract
"Generation and Gender in Academia is the first cross-cultural analysis of the differences in career trajectories and experiences between a senior and younger group of women academics. This volume uses individual autobiographies of women academics in Australia, Ireland, New Zealand, Portugal, South Africa, Sweden, Turkey and the United Kingdom, who are members of the international feminist research consortium--the Women in Higher Education Management (WHEM) Network. Four major themes in their stories are national context; organisational context; family, class and location; and agency. While the younger generation believe they are entitled to careers on the same terms as their male colleagues, major challenges remain. These include countering the argument that the battles have been won for younger academics; lack of support and mentoring at the outset of careers; the continuing difficulty of aspiring to a traditional academic career path; capacity for playing the 'game' in managerial universities; and recognising mobility as crucial to career success.

- Abstract
The Aziz Suryal Atiya papers (1927-1993) contain curriculum vitae, honorary documents, membership cards, contracts, royalty information, personal and academic correspondence, memos, reports, class schedules and materials, notebooks, lecture notes, book reviews, programs, memorial materials, biographies, and maps. Some of the subjects included in the material are studies Atiya did for the Coptic Encyclopedia, an expedition he took to Mount Sinai, and Arab-Israeli relations. Also included are papers related to Joseph Smith's Egyptian papyri and Atiya's role in making them public. While searching for Coptic and Arabic papyri in the Metropolitan Museum of Art storeroom in New York City, it was brought to Atiya's attention that the Joseph Smith Egyptian papyri, which is significant because they are the original documents used for research to write Facsimile No. 1 of the Book of Abraham, a scripture of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church). Since the Egyptian language could not be read in the 1830s and 1840s when the papyri were supposedly translated, this discovery provided the first chance to check Joseph Smith's ability to translate the Egyptian papyri. Atiya functioned as the mediator between the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the First Presidency of the LDS Church.

26. A Cultural-historical Activity Theory Analysis of Factors Affecting Technology Adoption by Higher Education Program Faculty
- Author
-
Marquez, Rolando Jose
- Subjects
- Higher Education, Educational technology, Qualitative research, Universities and colleges faculty, technology adoption, instructional media, Educational Assessment, Evaluation, and Research
- Abstract
Background: Researchers have revealed that among the reasons provided as barriers to the adoption of technology are: lack of technology resources, time, professional development and support (National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education, 1997; Parker, 1996; Sheldon & Jones, 1996; Sheldon & Jones, 1996; NCATE, 1997; Shelly, Gunter & Gunter, 2010, U.S. Congress, 1995). Several models used to explain the usage of technology within education such as the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) have been somewhat ineffective in explaining or providing a holistic view of the factors that come into play when examining technology infusion and diffusion as they account for a limited percentage of variance (Legris, Ingham & Collerete, 2003; Pan, Gunter, Sivo & Cornell, 2005). Purpose: To better understand the choices that faculty members make in their use of educational technologies and media and to determine why some technologies such as blackboard have been widely adopted, but others have not. The following research question was formulated to guide the study: "Why do faculty members in higher education make the instructional choices they do with respect to educational technologies and media? Also, how can the use of Cultural Historical Activity Theory (CHAT), as a more robust framework, offer an increase in explanatory power to better enable the understanding of a multitude of factors that impact the adoption and use of certain media technologies? Setting: A technology rich department at a college of a large urban university in the Southeastern United States. Participants: Three faculty members who taught in the department. Research Design: Qualitative multi-site case study informed by Engeström's Cultural Historical Activity Theory (CHAT) (Engeström, 1987). Data Collection and Analysis: Document analysis, individual interviews, and laboratory and classroom observations provided data. Qualitative data analysis that employed qualitative inquiry research was informed by Creswell's "data analysis spiral" and Engeström's CHAT. Findings: Visits at the institution presented several of the key ideas in the CHAT framework including contradictions within the media selection activity and tensions at the primary, secondary, tertiary and quaternary levels. Additional themes included group work, autonomy, media as a tool to achieve learning goals, caring for students, early adopters, and relevance with current trends.

- Abstract
Louis C. Zucker spent most of his professional career at the University of Utah. He became an influential member of the Utah Jewish community and was active in promoting Judaic studies at the university. Dr. Zucker's papers were donated to the Marriott Library in 1982, by his son, Alex Wilson, and have been organized into the four sections: personal, religious, University of Utah, and miscellaneous materials., The personal section of the collection contains information on Zucker and his family. Additional materials include personal correspondence, poetry, information on awards Zucker received, and materials relating to his doctoral thesis. Dr. Zucker collected, as well as authored, numerous articles and addresses on religious topics. These items comprise the largest portion of the religious section and can be located in boxes five and six. Other materials in the religious section include prayer and song books, information on Jewish organizations Zucker affiliated with, and material on Jewish holidays. As a professor at the University of Utah, Zucker taught numerous courses in English and Judaic studies. The third section of the collection contains lecture notes, exams, and other materials used in his classes. Also, materials pertaining to Zucker's association with the Middle East Center and the University of Utah Libraries can be located in this section., The final section of the collection consists of a wide assortment of materials Zucker collected. Of particular interest are the materials related to Rabbi Adolph H. Fink, who was active in the anti-Nazi movement in the United States prior to and during the Second World War, and letters and poetry written by early twentieth- century American poet, Sara Teasdale. Additionally, Zucker acquired a portion of Judge Herbert Schiller's personal papers. These can be located in boxes seventeen and eighteen. Along with the written materials, an authentic Sumerian cuneiform tablet accompanied the Zucker collection. The tablet is now housed in the Rare Books Division of Special Collections. Historical charts of French, German, and Spanish literature, as well as a drawing of a perception fountain, are located in the map case.
